What exactly is a Data Entry job? What do they do?

I'm unemployed and I've found Data Entry positions but I really don't know what are the requirements for a Data Entry position? All I know is you have to type fast, what else do they do?

What exactly is a Data Entry job? What do they do?
Basically they just enter data into their company's computer system. Depending on what that data might be, the way the data is entered can differ, but basically it's just entering data into computers. For example an insurance claims data entry position would involve entering the injury/medical/insurance/personal data into the computer for each claim so that the company can compensate them. An engineering data entry position would be more mathematical and involve numbers and equations. Data entry with economics would probably be entering in profit, income, expenses, etec.
Reply:I have done it before. You enter information from application forms for loans, new client accounts, etc into the computer.

Example: If it is for a new loan, you will find the exact application form on your computer screen. Everything the client put on the hard copy (Name, address, income, etc), you type in. Any important stuff missing goes to your customer service person to callout and get. If your job is listed as administrative then sometimes you place a call yourself but this is rare for data entry.

It is boring BUT is usually one of the faster ways to get into a good company. It is also good office experience that has helped me get into my chosen field.
Reply:data entry positions want ppl who can type fast, proofread, pay attention to detail, organized.

Reply:It depends on what kind of Data Entry position. They usually tell you what you need to do during the interview (if the job posting is not clear). It involves a lot of typing and accuracy. It depends on the size of the company. If it is a small company that most likely you will do other things too such as filing, answering the phone, etc. If it is a big company they usually have a specific job task for you to do and nothing else. The job requires you to be able to type for at least 45 WPM (Words Per Minute). You need to be detail oriented because the data that you enter has to be accurate. You have to be able to sit for a long period of time and type type type. It is a pretty boring job. Good luck!
Reply:Try it. It will help U.

Best of Luck.
Reply:Data entry is not only typing fast but typing NUMBERS fast. I do that at work and it't not so hard once you practice with the right fingers. You basically use the number keypad alot and submit the information given to a database. It's not so bad. You should try it.
Reply:Work-at-Home ads/surveys sites usually don't pay off. Be especially wary of ads that promise huge annual salaries; they often require expensive upfront fees with no guarantee. You risk losing your money and wasting a lot of time and energy.
